I’m currently reading The Fellowship of the Ring to Bryanna. Again, as with The Hobbit, she’s definately engaged in the story.
While reading The Hobbit to her last winter, I bought a book called The Atlas of Middle-Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad. It’s definately neat to read a chapter of the story and afterwards (or right in the middle of) pull out the atlas to see detailed maps that match. The atlas applies just as well to The Lord of the Rings series — from the Shire to Maggot’s Farm to the Old Forrest, Tom Bombadil’s house and the Barrow-downs, we’ve been following the progress of our adventursome hobbit’s. Some reviews of the atlas are critical about the errors and lack of accuracy in the atlas, but it’s a hansome work and I’m not going to worry to much if it’s not perfect.
I’ve agreed with Bryanna that we’ll watch each of the LOTR movies, but we must finish the corresponding book first. I think it’s best to let her imagination fill in the visuals based on the books first. I’m also enjoying the re-read of the books after seeing the movies — the books are so rich and colourful and there are many bits that are just not in the movie.
